Removing snow from an RV roof

A row of RVs covered in snow during the winter.

Removing snow from the roof of a recreational vehicle is important to prevent damage caused by the weight of the snow and ice buildup.

If you are able to inspect and remove snow from your RV, here are some tips to do it safely:

  • Use a snow rake with a telescopic handle to reach the roof without having to climb on top. Opt for a foam or plastic rake to avoid damaging the roof’s surface. (Avoid metal shovels, as they can cause cracks or tear off sealing joints.)
  • Do not climb onto the roof, as it can be slippery and fragile.
  • Remove the snow in small layers to avoid overloading any part of the roof.
  • Be careful around air conditioners, antennas, solar panels, and vents. Clear the snow gently around these components to prevent damage.
  • If a layer of ice has formed, do not use salt (as it could damage the roof). Instead, use a spray de-icer that is safe for RV materials.
  • Consider using a protective cover during winter.

By following these tips, you’ll extend the lifespan of your RV and avoid costly repairs.
